Actions to Take After Flooding:

  1. Remove excess water using mopping and blotting techniques.
  2. Wipe away excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  3. Remove and prop up wet upholstery and cushions.
  4. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  5. Enhance drying by turning on air conditioning in the summer.
  6. Safeguard wet carpeting by removing colored rugs.
  7. Transfer art objects to a secure, dry location.
  8. Collect loose items from the floors.

Things to Avoid After Flooding:

  1. Avoid leaving wet fabrics in place; hang furs and leather goods.
  2. Refrain from leaving books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  3. Do not use your household vacuum for water removal.
  4. Steer clear of using television or other household appliances.
  5. Avoid turning on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and stay out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.
